Boy, Sam Witwer sure does give good genre. First he was pilot Crashdown on Battlestar Galactica, and now he'll be taking on Superman himself in season eight of Smallville. According to Witwer, his newly introduced regular character, Davis "Doomsday" Bloome, starts out as a good guy (who has designs on Ms. Chloe herself), but before too long his romantic quest is interrupted by waking nightmares that bode not well for Chloe, Davis, Clark or Metropolis at large. Read on to hear what Samuel had to say about working with Allison Mack, creating Bloome's dark side and why Doomsday is unique in the pantheon of Superman villains.

Viva la Hills! Season four of The Hills premieres Aug. 18 on MTV, and the trailer is above. Some observations taken from same:

• How to Believe, Hills Style: It helps if you think of this as glossy improv, like Friday Night Lights.
• How to Cope, Hills Style: Spencer Pratt is a truly inspired supervillain for our time. I know this has been said before, but that is a lunkhead I love to hate. (Gotta enjoy that part, or it's all just too stressful.)
• How to Decipher Feelings, Hills Style: I think if Lauren Conrad lets her mascara run on camera, it signifies actual emotional strain.

Brooke Smith, aka cardiac surgeon extraordinaire Dr. Erica Hahn on Grey's Anatomy, swung by during the ABC-Disney TCA party to discuss her character's developing relationship with Callie O'Malley (Sara Ramirez), including a powwow with GLAAD and Sara's stunning (no, really, stunning) singing ability.

To celebrate the return of new episodes of Psych every Friday at 10 on p.m. USA Network, I talked to Steve Franks, creator and executive producer, and he was chock-full of delightful dish on Shawn (James Roday) and his lady-friend Juliet (Maggie Lawson), Shawn and his long-missing mom (Cybill Shepherd), and the continuing adventures of Gus, Lassie and the chief. NBC Universal execs Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff just took the stage here at the TV Critics Press Tour, and they were just bursting at the seams with scoop about The Office spinoff. OK, not really, but I know many of you fellow Office die-hards are also hanging onto every word when it comes to the Dunder-verse (as am I), and there were some solid revelations, so here we go...

The newly announced Amy Poehler show will not be an Office spinoff, but they are still working on an Office spinoff.

A little confusing, yes, but based on what the NBC suits said, the just-announced project with Amy Poehler is not a fork of an Office story; it exists as a stand-alone, but it will have a similar tone and style, since it comes from the same writer-producers. At the same time, the execs and writers are also working on an Office spinoff, which will come from the world of Dunder Mifflin.
